A narrative review has just been published by the Behavioral Addictions Research Laboratory in the Journal of Addictive Diseases. The aim of this narrative review was to evaluate and summarize the available data on the efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of gambling disorder. This narrative review was co-authored by Rezkalla Farkouh, Sophie Audette-Chapdelaine and Magaly Brodeur.
The initial search identified 1,925 articles. After screening and elimination of duplicates, 18 articles were included in the review (11 studies were systematic reviews and meta-analyses, 6 were reviews and 1 was an open trial). Eight pharmacological agents (naltrexone, nalmefene, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, citalopram, escitalopram, lithium and topiramate) that were studied in randomized controlled trials and open-label trials showed small to moderate effect sizes in symptom reduction.
